1st Seaton and 1st Colyton Scout Groups are working together to provide you with the best introduction to your volunteering journey with our Scouting family.

There are so many great opportunities for you to learn new skills with us – and it all beings with our 'Getting Started' process...

How do I get started?

To start with, let's have a quick chat! This helps us to understand more about you and discover how you would like to volunteer with us. We have roles for everyone! It also allows us to explain the process and let you know what to expect.

So what's the process?

You don't have to jump straight in! Why not join us as a helper to begin with?

But once you're ready to become a leader, we have the appointing process – but it's not as daunting as it sounds!

The steps are:

Register as a volunteer.
Request an enhanced Disclosure (DBS) check.
Complete safety and safeguarding training.

In most cases, you can start volunteering with us straight away. However, this is under supervision until the disclosure check is returned.

In Scouts, keeping children and young people safe is our number one priority. The safety of our young people and volunteers is paramount, and disclosure checks are part of how we ensure a safe environment.

Depending on how you're looking to volunteer with us, some of the following steps may not be needed. Some of these steps can be done at the same time too.

1. Register as a volunteer

Applies to: All volunteers

You complete an Adult Information Form.

Note: We do not need your references at this point. (We'll ask for references at step 3 if you need to do this)

This is designed to help us collect the information we need to add you as a new adult member (over the age of 18) onto Compass. It also includes a declaration

We use an adult volunteer management system called Compass. (This is changing soon, but all the data will be migrated across)

2. Request a Disclosure (DBS) check

Applies to: All volunteers

Atlantic Data manage this Government service on behalf of Scouting. It can take anywhere from 10 days to 3 months for a disclosure to be returned. The time taken tends to depend on where you've lived over the past five years, as each local Police Force, as each Police Force processes

3. Complete safety and safeguarding training

Where?

We want to open Squirrels in both Seaton and Colyton.

We'll do this in two steps:

Starting small in one location, we'll focus on building ourselves into a thriving Squirrels Drey for the whole community.
Learning from our success and experiences at the first Drey, we'll then launch our second Drey at the remaining location.

Where we open our first Drey is completely up to you! It will be:

Where the demand is.
Where our volunteers are.

Both locations are brilliant venues with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy.

When?

Again, this is completely up to you!

We need to carefully choose a day of the week, and the time of the day, that works for both our new Squirrels and our new volunteer leaders. We want to make Squirrels accessible to as many young people as possible, and to provide them with the best experience.

You can help shape this by getting involved with us at this planning stage. We have complete flexibility to review, change and improve things as we launch Squirrels together.
